Finding position of minimal difference between columns of two matrices

I have two matrices each representing an image. They both overlap at some point. I am trying to find where they overlap (not necessarily exactly equal) and delete the columns that are similar on one of the matrices. Then juxtapose them and create a smooth image. Any code or advice hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance (Matrices are same size)
