GUIDE start window appears totally empty (no controls)

Hi,

I'm running Matlab 2013b on Ubuntu, and I'm having many problems with the display of windows. For instance, when I try to start GUIDE (typing "guide" at the command prompt), I get just an empty rectangle:

instead of the expected window (here is the one I get on my mac)

Any idea on how to solve this issue?

Jut in case someone comes across the problem: I just changed to GNOME, and everything is back to normal...
