How Can I increase the Avalanche effect of a cryptographic algorithm.

Now I am modifying an existing cryptographic algorithm to increase the security. but still the Avalanche effect is same as the old one since the algorithm is based on substitution. what mechanism should I use to increase the Avalanche Effect? Anyone please help.
