There is a force function acting on top surface. How to invert for the forcing function (location and magnitude)?

Let's say there is a force function on the top surface. There is also a recording point somewhere inside the domain. How do I invert the forcing function to calculate the force's magnitude and location? I only want to know a proper approach to the problem.
