Can I install a unit of MATLAB for PC to the server?

1 visualizzazione (ultimi 30 giorni)
We bought some units of MATLAB for our PCs, but then we want to install one of software into the Institution server so that many shall benefit from it. Our main question is to find out the possibility, and if possible advise.
Thanks!

Mathworks has available several related licenses for that purpose:
  • Networked Named User: the license is made available through a server, but only specific users are able to use the license, and each named user is guaranteed to be able to access MATLAB (one license per named user, reserved for that particular user)
  • Group licenses: the license is made available through a server, but only people already listed in a group license are able to use the license. The number of people in the group may be more than the number of licenses, and within that group it is "first come, first served" -- and once a particular user starts using MATLAB, the license is not made available to another user until the first user quits MATLAB (so if they do not quit MATLAB while they are away from their computer, then no-one can use that license, even though in one sense it is "idle")
  • Network Floating licenses: the license is made available through the server, and anyone who matches the access credentials (such as a certain IP address range) can use the license, without having to be already listed in a license file. These licenses are "first come, first served" -- and once a particular user starts using MATLAB, the license is not made available to another user until the first user quits MATLAB (so if they do not quit MATLAB while they are away from their computer, then no-one can use that license, even though in one sense it is "idle"). This is the most expensive kind of MATLAB license
  • Dedicated Host licenses: any one person at a time who is using the "console" on a particular host can use MATLAB; this kind of license might be used in a "computer lab"
Back a decade or so ago, Group licenses used to be the best value.
If you are placing a license on a server for use by anyone who has login access to the server, then Floating licenses (most expensive) were the only option, at least back when I was admin.
In my experience, it was common for some of the senior staff to expect that a license would always be available to them, so it was not uncommon to end up buying a couple of Networked Named User licenses for them personally. The expression in English is "Rank Hath Its Privileges".
