The unbalanced operation of an induction motor coupled with a generator
1. Electrical Unbalance in Motor Supply
- Phase voltage inequality (e.g., 400V–380V–390V)
- Phase angle differences
- Phase loss or under-voltage
2. Mechanical Unbalance
- Uneven torque due to fluctuating load on the generator
- Shaft misalignment or coupling defects
3. Electrical Unbalance in Generator Load
- Asymmetric or nonlinear load on the generator output (especially in 3-phase loads)
Effects of Unbalance on the System
🔌 On the Induction Motor:
- Negative sequence currents → create a backward rotating magnetic field
- Torque pulsation → leads to vibration and mechanical wear
- Overheating → due to increased current in one or two phases
- Reduced torque output → poor performance under load
- Increased losses → lower efficiency and possible damage
⚙️ On the Generator:
- Torque ripple from the motor affects voltage stability
- Output voltage fluctuation (especially if it's a synchronous generator)
- Possible overcurrent in windings if the load is unbalanced
- Thermal stress in generator components
Quantitative Impact Example
If the voltage unbalance on the motor input is just 2%, it can lead to:
- Up to 6–10% current unbalance
- Rotor heating increase of up to 50%
- 25% drop in torque efficiency
- 5–10% voltage fluctuation at the generator output under load
Mitigation Measures
- Supply-Side Solutions:
- Use voltage regulators or transformers for balanced input
- Phase monitoring relays to detect and disconnect on unbalance
- Generator Load Management:
- Balance loads across all three phases
- Use active or passive filters if the load is nonlinear
- Mechanical Solutions:
- Ensure shaft alignment and balanced coupling
