Interleaved buck converter

It is commonly used in applications that require high output current and improved performance, such as in power supplies for CPUs.
Key Features of an Interleaved Buck Converter:
- Multiple Phases: Two or more buck converters are connected in parallel.
- Phase Shifted Operation: Each converter is switched at the same frequency but with a time offset (e.g., 180° for 2-phase).
- Reduced Ripple: Interleaving reduces output current and input current ripple due to cancellation effects.
- Thermal Distribution: Heat is spread across multiple inductors and switches.
- Improved Efficiency: Lower RMS currents reduce conduction losses in components.
Basic Diagram:
Each phase includes:
- A switch (MOSFET)
- A diode or synchronous rectifier
- An inductor
- Output capacitors (shared or individual)
Benefits:
- Higher Power Capability
- Better Thermal Management
- Lower Filter Size due to reduced ripple
Applications:
- High-current DC power supplies
- Computer and server motherboards
- Battery charging systems
- Electric vehicle power electronics
