What is a Two-Quadrant Chopper?
In power electronics, a chopper is a DC-DC converter. A two-quadrant chopper can control both:
  • Direction of current (positive and negative current)
  • Sign of voltage remains the same (usually positive)
So the operation is in quadrants I and II of the torque-speed plane.➕ Quadrant I (Motoring)
  • Voltage: Positive
  • Current: Positive
  • Motor drives the load (normal motoring)
➖ Quadrant II (Regenerative Braking)
  • Voltage: Positive
  • Current: Negative
  • Motor acts as a generator and returns power to the supply
