Facing Moore’s Law with Model-Driven R&D
Markus Matthes, ASML
The heartbeat of the semiconductor industry is described by Moore’s Law: The number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles every two years. To keep pace with this trend, ASML requires new technology innovations to improve their scanner performance.
ASML has built a development organization that has grown over many years into what it is today: over 4000 bright scientists, engineers, and technicians working on new, ground-breaking ASML machines.
A multidisciplinary efficient R&D process is needed to face the challenges in physics, precision engineering, mechatronics, and software. To cope with this complexity, ASML uses MATLAB® to create models of the physics in the machine and the expected behavior. This approach has proven to be very successful: Its usage spans the entire ASML organization, from R&D to production and customer support.
After an introduction into ASML, the presentation describes a specific use case and shows the role of MATLAB across the organization. Finally, Markus discusses how to continue Moore’s Law by leveraging model-driven R&D.
