Design Filters

Once you import or create digital filters in the Filter Designer app, you can further modify the filter design by performing these actions:

  • Edit Filter Parameters — Adjust filter parameters to meet your design requirements.

  • Edit Poles and Zeros — Add or relocate poles and zeros to modify the filter transfer function.

  • Transform Filter — Transform an FIR or IIR filter from one frequency response to another.

  • Cascade Filters — Create a digital filter cascade from two or more selected digital filters.

At any time, you can Undo or Redo Filter Design Updates. Once you complete an action, a new or updated filter shows in the Filters table for further inspection, design, or export.

Edit Filter Parameters

To adjust the design of a filter, select the filter from the Filters table, navigate to the Parameters panel, expand each section to see a list of available parameters, and edit the parameters of your choice. For more information, see Filter Parameters Panel.

Once you modify the parameters of a selected filter, the Update Status value in the Filters table changes to Pending. To confirm the parameter edits and update the analysis plots, click Update Filter in the Filter section under the Designer tab. To restore the filter, click Restore .

Edit Poles and Zeros

To enter the edit pole-zero mode and edit zeros and poles, select a filter from the Filters table, click Edit Pole-Zero in the Actions section under the Designer tab. Filter Designer shows the poles and zeros in the pole-zero plot using "x" and "o" symbols, respectively.

In the Edit Pole-Zero mode, you can select a filter section, add poles and zeros, relocate selected poles and zeros, analyze the edited filter, set display options, and save the edited filter. For more information, see Pole-Zero Editor.

Transform Filter

To flip, invert, or convert an existing filter design using a frequency transformation, select an FIR or IIR filter from the Filters table and click Transform Filter in the Actions section under the Designer tab. In the dialog box that appears, set the transform type, original frequency and target frequency. For more information, see Transform Filter.

Cascade Filters

To create a digital filter cascade, select up to 15 filters from the Filters table, click Cascade Filters on the Actions section under the Designer tab. Each of the selected filters becomes a stage of the digital filter cascade. In the dialog box that appears, sort the filter stages, set up the frequency limits and sample rate of the digital filter cascade. For more information, see Cascade Filters.

Undo or Redo Filter Design Updates

To undo or redo filter design updates, including pole-zero edits and frequency transformations, click Undo or Redo , respectively. Once you complete any of these actions, Filter Designer updates the analysis plots across all displays.
