Why does FMINCON run vast evaluations of the non linear constraint function?

I have the FMINCON running with gradient input, and a nonlinear constraint function as well. The non linear constraint function returns the constraints and a gradient for each constraint. It works, but I have to wait for hundreds of evaluations of the constraint function within each iteration. Why is that? Nothing happens to the constraints 10 decimals out...
