If you want to run an external software, ActiveX is the best way. MATLAB makes a Component Object Model of whatever software you want to use, and its features(functions and parameters) are available as calls to APIs/CLIs. I have used it for a many external tools such as Excel, DeweSoft, CANalyzer etc..

You can also use DDE methods (archaic).
You can also use command line interface (depending on where the software comes from).
You can also use the sim command, and get_obj/set_obj, if you are talking about simulink.
Can you please giveme an example for each method? Thanks :)

Can I please know What external application do you want to use?
If you look at the code in xlswrite, you'll see a good example of the ActiveX method interfacing with excel.
Command line stuff uses commands that look like:
!dir "C:\Windows\"
I can't show you a good example of DDE methods, but the commands can be found as links from
doc ddeinit

For DeweSoft you can use this ActiveX example available in our download center. For further questions you can also address our Developer portal.
