How do I propogate a signal name from a Model Reference in 2011b?

I found some documentation that pertains to newer versions (2014a) for propagating signal names from inside of the model reference block to the outside. However, I do not believe that this same option exists in 2011b. Is there a simple way to access the inside of the model reference block from the top level? I have looked through the ObjectParameters for the model reference block and cannot trace back any further than the outside port of the model reference block.
