I am new to MATLAB are simple files saved in 2014 format compatible with 2013 (ie no advanced functionality)

I have just downloaded a student version of MATLAB 2014. If the university PCs have 2013 will the files be compatible? Many Thanks Andrew.

Yes, they will be. You can also check the function "save" and its flags to maintain compatibility with even older versions of MATLAB.
