How to avoid Excel using Matlab

Hey, I am about to finish my studies and with it, probably, my Matlab usage, as most employers favor Excel. I was looking for methods to avoid this. Does anyone have hints or experience willing to share?
The advantage of Excel is the overview (and for some the editing as well). My thoughts were to literally copy a sheet with text, numbers and formulas in Matlab; the variable editor is the sheet, its entries the text and numbers and m-files are the underlying formulas. This might look farfetched but I think this basic functionality combined with the advantages of Matlab is worthwhile. You just cannot move over an entry (cell) and press f2 or something.
It is not that I am so bad at Excel but I like Matlab more. The xls/csv read/write functions make exchanges possible as well. Could you tell your own ideas or comment on mine?
Regards,

I think basically it comes down to: do you want a tool developed for accounting or technical computing
