modified gradient in 3D volume

The judgement in one paper is written as follows: abs( I(x+1/2*n) - I(x) ) < abs( I(x) - I(x-1/2*n) ), where n is a vector representing the unit direction of the gradient regarding to I(x)。I(x) is a 3D volume image. My question is how to compute this judgement.
