Gabor filter with NN

Can we use Gabor filtering to identify character images effectively? If we train data (using neural network - feedforward) with correct characters around 1000 and test with 100 correct and incorrect characters.

I think the easiest way to answer this question would be to do the experiment. And that's easier for you than for anyone else, since we don't have the images. But out of curiosity - why Gabor filtering in particular?
