How to scale vertical axis without erasing boxplot horizontal axis?

I want the same vertical axis scale so the two subplot can be directly compared more easily. axis([-Inf Inf 0 6]) fails to preserve the horizontal axis boxplot grouping text. How do we rescale the vertical axes without erasing the horizontal text?

ylim([0 6]) after the boxplot command allows one to edit the vertical axis scale without touching the horizontal axis.
