Classification of noise in a 1D signal

Hi guys. I need some help regarding a project in which I need to separate noise from a signal and then classify the type of noise (white gaussian or exponential etc). I have tried using some Matlab built-in filters which eliminate the noise but does not give any exact information regarding the noise. Kindly suggest any method that can be used to separate the noise from any test signal so the noise can be analysed. Thanks.

Can you follow the first example on the document page for fft() (the single sided spectrum) and post your results here? There is no one-trick pony when it comes to filtering signals, so it depends completely on the characteristics of your data.
