Edit plot in a GUI

I'm in the process of writing a GUI that presents a plot to the user in a GUI window with buttons. And I was hoping to allow the user to edit the plot in the GUI window when done processing. However, if I do the usual way of using the plotedit function in the .m file when a checkbox is selected, the entire GUI becomes free to edit and none of my buttons then function. This is an undesired result.

The problem with the plotedit function that I am having is that I can only select the specific figure handle, not any other type of graphics handle. So, is there a way to use the plotedit function (or any other function or script) to allow just a plot to be editted in a GUI window, and not the entire figure (i.e. the GUI)?
