hi brave,
start with small tutorials in the web, then choose a book to read of Mathworks specialized in your field, for example if you study Mechanics then try to search for titles '" mechanical engineering with Matlab " , etc,...

I don't think it's possible to be an expert in Matlab programming in one year. Unless you are already an expert in other scientific language programming, in this case, using Matlab help, Some document in the web or books allow you to be an expert, I will also recommend to be active in this forum.

I too don't think it is possible to be an expert in MATLAB programming in one year. The language basics are not bad, but to layer on parallel processing, mex, object oriented programming, Simulink, the toolboxes, and the extensive scientific libraries, is just too much for 1 year, even if one is already well acquainted with another scientific programming language.

I learned while doing my Ph.D. that the more you learn about something, the more you realize that you know hardly anything at all about it - just a tiny fraction of what there is to learn. Though that seems to contradict the standard saying that "Experts learn more and more about a narrower and narrower field, until eventually they know everything about nothing at all."

true, a famous scientist said exactly the same ( maybe Faraday i dont remember) : he said " i am smart enough to realize that i am dumb",
so how long it took you to get the Phd?
thnks for sharing if you do not mind

I like that quote - it's true. It took me a total of about 6.5 years, from the time I entered grad school until my defense, which is typical. Actually it was really only about 2 years 4 months after I switched to my final project after the first project never came to fruition and I had to abandon it, which caused some wasted time.

alright, great , how was the shift from one project to another , from very different fields? or very related ones ?

They were both in medical imaging but I went from a hardware based project in ophthalmology, where the hardware was almost constantly broken down, to a software based one in radiology that ran on reliable computers and I was limited only by my own brain and not by finicky, unreliable, and fragile hardware.
