FlexLM has a feature called TIMEOUT which automatically returns idle license seats after a specified amount of time has lapsed. TIMEOUT has the following limitations:
  1. The minimum duration for TIMEOUT is 14400 seconds, i.e. 4 hours.
  2. TIMEOUT only applies to MATLAB. Once MATLAB times out, toolboxes in use in that session of MATLAB will also be returned.
  3. To enact a TIMEOUT, MATLAB clients must be on R14SP3 or higher and the network license manager must be running version 9.2 or higher.
  4. For the purposes of TIMEOUT, a MATLAB session is considered idle if there has been no user interaction and no running jobs for the entirety of the specified TIMEOUT duration.
To enact a TIMEOUT, add the following line in your license manager options file:
TIMEOUT MATLAB 14400
This will set the TIMEOUT duration to 4 hours, however you can set the TIMEOUT duration higher if desired. The TIMEOUT duration must be specified in seconds. The network license manager must be stopped and started for the new TIMEOUT duration to take effect.

What happens is the client has unsaved work in his/her MATLAB session and leaves the workstation unattended for the four hour timeout period? Will the unsaved work be lost? When they come back will MATLAB still be open and will they be allowed to save their work without a license?

In that scenario, MATLAB will check out another license key from the server when the user returns to the client workstation and would not lose any unsaved work.

What if no license was available? Would he/she be able to keep the application open until a license becomes available?

If no license was available, he/she would receive 'License Manager Error -4 Maximum number of users for MATLAB reached. Try again later' In this case any unsaved work would remain unsaved and he/she would not be able to use MATLAB until a license was available.

We have another package that when prompted that you have returned from idle, regardless of the state of the licenses, gives you the option to save.

Hello do you have info on this package that lets you save your work?

SolidWorks, I believe the Autodesk packages. You can save regardless of having a license.

My licence file contains group licences and floating licences. I wish that the timeout impacts only the floating licences. How can I specify it in the licence file ?
