Make a categorical scatter plot without overlapping markers, resulting in a cigar-shape. This type of plot is useful when you have too many points for a normal scatter plot, but too few to warrant a box plot (or you might simply not want to use one). The markers automatically resize when the figure size changes.

Tested on R2012b and R2017a, so it should work on all releases.
This code is also compatible with Octave (tested on 4.2.0).
