Quantify Data Density Plot

I’m using the Data Density plot described by Malcolm McLean in order to get a better visual representation of my data (More than 1000 X,Y coordinates). I was wondering if there is a way to quantify (e.g. in percentages) the different colors in the plot. If I’m able to quantify the colors, I’m able to make a proper legend of the plot.
