ModelSim DE Linux with MATLAB 2021a

I am trying to use ModelSim DE with HDL Verifier in MATLAB 2021a on a Linux machine. But I am getting errors related to a check in hdlsim.m that when run from a *nix machine, forces ModelSim to 64-bit mode throught the MTI_VCO_MODE environment variable (specifically line 118). This is strange to me as my ModelSim rep gave me a chart that shows ModelSim PE and DE both only support 32-bit in Linux. So where is this requirement for 64-bit coming from in MATLAB? Does MATLAB lump Questa in with ModelSim? Questa does support 64-bit in Linux for both the Core Mixed, and Prime versions.

Is there any way around this issue? I attempted just commenting those lines out, but it never started the simulator.
