How to run a gradient descent optimization for image registration?

I am having two images where second image is a translated image of the first. I am choosing a random 8x8 block from the first image, then choosing a subset of blocks of pixels from the second image and I want to estimate a block match by comparing the 8x8 in the subset of pixels. How do I run a gradient optimization in this? Please help me..
