Matlab r2013b Installation, "could not create the java virtual machine"

When clicking on the install icon, installing r2013b onto MacOS Mojave, i get the error

Unrecognized option: -d64
Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit.
