effect of filter on my signal

I have a signal that oscillates about 12. I want to filter out noise and just zone in on the main peak so I used a butterworth filter, is it possible however that the signal that is returned now oscillates around zero. Also if I create my own signal using amplitudes from the frequency spectra how can I create the signal with the correct amplitude
