Why doesn't Matlab work with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1?

I recently updated my Macbook Pro (which now runs with Yosemite 10.10.1) but now I can no longer open Matlab. I have the R2014 version. The following message displays when I try to open it: "You can’t open the application “MATLAB_R2014a” because it is not supported on this type of Mac."

Is there anyway to fix it? I have a Matlab course and if I can't use it with this new update then I am screwed. Please help!

Any insights? I have the same problem now with 2014b and yosemite
