I was trying to connect raspberry pi model B+ to my laptop using host to host connection but it shows could not detect raspberry pi

I was trying to connect raspberry pi model B+ to my laptop using host to host connection but it shows could not detect raspberry pi board on local area connection. I even tried with the router but after setup it shows SSH connection timed out. I even tried the manual config but no use. I am using power cable of 5V and 1 amps. Please guide me through this
