Connect to a Java program from within MATLAB

Greetings,

Most of the MATLAB Java Interfaces that exist, help establish a MATLAB session from within Java and then execute commands in MATLAB from the Java application. Is there a way to trigger the launch of a Java application from within an open MATLAB session that then establishes a connection to the already open MATLAB session?
