How to use APIs to create interface between ASW created in Simulink and BSW created in Embedded C program?

For one of our projects, we are using embedded C coding for firmware development. However, for Application SW, we are using Simulink MBD. Being new to this field, I am not sure how to use APIs to interface between Firmware and ASW. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
