A clean upgrade of the OS to "El Capitan" resolved the issue. Multiple instances are now provided. Perhaps the problem was caused by corruption of my Mavericks installation.

Is it possible to open multiple sessions / instances of R2015b? This was a very convenient capability in R2014b.

Hi Kent,
yes, that should still be possible. Has your license type changed? E.g. from an individual user license to a concurrent license? In this case you could run into problems starting multiple instances, since the concurrent license works differently (different users possible, but one instance per time).

I must admit I'm not expert on licenses, but I'm pretty sure it's a licensing question not a technical problem ... Talking to your group license administrator is probably your best bet.

If you just happen to be using OS-X see http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/93431-is-it-possible-to-start-multiple-matlab-sessions-on-a-mac-os-x-in-matlab-7-7-r2008b
For other operating systems, you might need to do something so that clicking on the icon does not just bring you back to the same session. I am not familiar enough with those operating systems to suggest the mechanism.

If you got it fixed, please post the resolution - for posterity.
