What is Sorting function and how to write it?

I am new to Digital Signal Processing. I missed my last lecture of dsp just because of illness. I have discussed with my class fellows and they even don't have any idea how to write sorting function...They just told me that you have to write data in ascending and descending order. can someone please explain this. Thanks . and they also gave me this eq. Y= my sort(x).
