How do i find the width and length of a bloodstain from an uploaded image?

I am working on a college project where one of the steps is that we upload an image of a bloodstain and have to obtain the major and minor axes(the length and width) of the bloodstain alone. Our images are in gif format. I have uploaded a sample image.Can someone please help with the code for this?
