Energy in image processing

Hello, I reading a paper (Recursive sub-image histogram equalization applied to gray scale images) . In this paper , we have 'Energy '. What is it? What means 'energy' in image processing? Can i write matlab code for calculate energy in gray scale image? Thanks

For a reflective light image, the gray level is the energy (actually a scale factor times it). If you don't know why, ask me for a more detailed answer. However there are different definitions of energy, and you should try to understand the definition the author uses.
