mat file save option -v7.3

I wanted to save variables with '-v7.3' option and after that append some variables using '-append' option. When I didn't use '-v7.3'option all was good but when I use '-v7.3' option Matlab stops. In the resource monitor, my HD represent very reading speed.

Is v7.3 not your default for saving? You can set/check this in your general preferences. Also which version of Matlab are you using?
When using both 'append' and '-v7.3' do you get the following warning?
Warning: Ignoring the version specified. The version flag is not required when using the '-append' flag.

My matlab version is 2016a and when i use '-v7.3' matlab just stops with no warning message. My hard disk is running 100% but writing speed is lower that 200KB/s

I just tested in R2016a in OS-X, and got the warning mentioned above but had no trouble with the saving.
I get the warning and saving on Windows 10, in R2016a.
