how to check a precision and a recall if I have a database of 10 gestures each containing different number of images?

I have written my own algorithm to extract hand gestures from images and experimented it with a certain database of images that contain hand gestures. As expected I got good results including bad ones. However, the overall result seems to work well. I am going to evaluate my method on this dataset.

How can I evaluate my algorithm?

Is it proper to use precision and recall? If YES, how can I accomplish this task?
