What is appplication of matlab in electrical engineering?

I am a student pursuing B.Tech in electrical engineering and I have been recommended to learn matlab . But I am unable to get the applications of matlab in my course. Please guide me about this topic and recommend some sources for learning Matlab and Simulink.
