View of variables in workspace

I swichted from Matlab 2013a to 2017a I code on a GUI. In debugging mode of 2013a i can see and manipulate all variables. In version 2017a i can manipulate but don't see them in the workspace window. How can I get back the variables into my workspace window?

In terms of the variable you can see and manipulate on the workspace, nothing has been removed from 2013a to 2017a. Could you post some screen shots of the differences?

A few people reported a problem with OS-X Sierra (I think it was) in which the variable browser was sometimes not showing the content of variables. I seem to recall that restarting MATLAB helped for them, but I could be confusing situations.
