Documentation for MAT-File Format v7

Is there any documentation on the Unicode extension of the '-v7' MAT-File Format regarding to the Level 5 MAT-File Format?

In detail, I see a 'MATLAB Array Type (Class)' of value 17 when I save a string array using the '-v7' option. I can't find anything about that different array header structure.

To check: when you say 'string array', are you referring to the R2016b and later "string" object class? Or are you talking about a simple character vector?

I have no trouble with Char matrices. I created a string array in R2016b. The 'Workspace' view said 'string', not 'char'.
