Call matlab functions from C++ or Java with Home Edition

I am currently using R2017b. I'd like to take some research I am doing and hook it up to a web API that will provide it data. I've gotten the feeling that matlab isn't exactly the best platform for hooking things up to live data. So naturally I'd prefer to use Java or C++. I understand that the compilers, matlab coder, and some other features are not provided with the home edition. However, I know sometimes these are just conveniences and there are manual ways to do the same thing.

Is it still possible to call functions written in matlab externally from C++ or Java if I perform the linking and project setup manually? If so, how do I do that?
