i2cdev write data arduino

I am using the i2cdev read function in the Matlab Arduino Hardware library to sample user input. Currently, I query the controller with read() and have the program respond. Is there a way to continuously write the current state of the controller to a text file while the main program is running (i.e., in the background continuously write the output of read())?
