how do you store MNIST data and labels as an ImageDatastore object for use in convolutional neural networks

I am trying to do image classification using CNNs but I am not sure how to use image data store on MNIST images and labels. I tried to feed the images and labels directly to trainNetwork but it gave me an error for Y stating it should be numeric or a categoric response. I am not sure how to proceed. Please help! THanks ---Ish
