How to find number of round but distorted objects from an image with low contrast?

I've attached an image of droplets. They are not particularly circular so I cannot use the circle finding function. Thresholding does not seem to work since the background and the objects don't have enough contrast between them. Any way I can get matlab to count the number of these droplets?droplets
