Can we create sparse matrix of symbolic variables?

How can I create sparse matrix of symbolic variables?

I have a matrix which can have only

and

values where t and

are some real numbers. Almost 90% of the matrix elements are zeros.

I tried to create sparse matrix using "sparse()" function but it gives the following error

Undefined function 'sparse' for input arguments of type 'sym'

Is there any way around this problem?

It is my question too. Does anybody know that?
