Cannot install MatLab 2020a University total headcount license Gtk-Message: 10:28:25.912: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" Ubuntu 20.04/Pop!OS 20.04

Hello,

When installing MatLab R2020a I am not able to proceed through the Destination section. Once the destination folder is chosen I am asked to verify login information through my institution. The hyperlink in the pop up box does not work, and when I click on it I get the canberra-gtk-module error.

GTK is a toolkit used for creating GUIs. Most of the default Ubuntu desktop, and the GNOME desktop environment, is developed using it. The "libcanberra" is a library for playing sounds.

- The "libcanberra-gtk-module", then, is the module that takes GUI events from GTK+ (like pressing a button, or minimizing a window) and plays some configured sound.

Workaround/Solution:

• You can refer to the following link that suggests installing the missing packages to fix this issue. https://www.mathworks.com/support/bugreports/details/1995075#fix_options

• You can try executing one of the following commands to install gtk modules if the above EBR step is not working for you.

$ sudo apt install libcanberra-gtk*

$ sudo apt install libcanberra-gtk-module:i386

$ sudo apt-get install libcanberra-gtk-module

$ sudo apt-get install libcanberra-gtk3-module

• If you still face the issue, the final step is to install the recent updates for your OS.

I have this exact issue as well. And none of the steps above helped. Not even updating the OS.

Hello Chidvi,

None of these solutions has helped the issue. Before my post I had already tried them to be honest. My OS is up to date.

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
