How to perform the same actions on a matrix that is broken up into sections?

Hi everyone,

I have a matrix where one column has values '1,1,1,.....1,2,2,2.....2,3,3,3..... etc). I want to divide the matrix up into several matrices with the same first column value, but then perform the same set of actions on each matrix (s.d., fourier transform) after I'll plot them all together. I'm dealing with a lot of really similar data so I'd really like to learn how to program more efficiently. Does anyone have any ideas on approaches I could use other than simply using a certain range within the matrix each time?

Please provide more specifics. How do you want your matrix split up? What exact operation(s) do you want done with the pieces? How would you put things back together? Etc. A small example would help.
