How to make axis represent as spherical coordinate style ?

Since all the parameters of my function are direction information i would like to make the axis of plot like below rather than default box style and origin at center: http://escience.anu.edu.au/lecture/cg/GlobalIllumination/BRDF.en.html

But i just want to change the axis style rather than plot with 3d polar data so i'm looking for a simpler way to achieve this, any suggestion ?
