Imshow and imagesc don't open new figure in new installation of Matlab

Hi! I just updated my matlab to 2013a and have a little problem with figures. If I call imshow or imagesc (any command that draws something basically) without having a figure open, it does nothing. I.e. a new figure is not opened automatically. I always have to create a figure manually first, then issue the drawing command. If I have a figure open, it redraws that figure without any problem.

I didn't have this issue in my previous installation, so I wonder if I need to make some setting or if this is always the case for 2013a?
